Consumer: Companies that Promise to Repair my Credit

Authored By: Legal Aid of North Carolina LSC Funded

Quick Facts

Consumers should be careful of companies that make claims regarding credit repairs. These companies are commonly called credit repair clinics or credit clinics.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the N.C. Attorney General pursue fraudulent actions by these companies.

Warning Signs

If you deal with a credit repair clinic be careful and look for any of the following:

  • Guarantees that late payments, bankruptcies or similar information will be removed from your credit report

  • Charges expensive fees to repair your credit

  • Seeks verification of the same credit account information even though the information has been corrected

  • Rarely gives you their own address or pushes you to make quick decisions.

Just remember that you can obtain the same result that Credit Repair clinics promise, but you can do it for free.

Try the following steps to repair your credit:

  1. Ask your creditors for a lower interest rate.

  2. Enter into a payment plan.

  3. Pay your bills on time

  4. Bring your accounts current.
